From Wreaths to Roots: A Mission Renewed in Love

As the sun began to dip over the scenic Pantawan Boulevard this afternoon, the gentle sea breeze carried a spirit of reverence and gratitude as St. Paul University Dumaguete commemorated its 121st founding anniversary with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the SPC Marker at Pantawan People's Park.

Guests gathered to honor the seven pioneering Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres who brought faith, education, and service to the shores of Dumaguete in 1904. The event, hosted by the SPUD Graduate School Department, reflected this year’s Founder’s Week theme, “Rooted in Love, Rising in Hope.”

Among those who graced the occasion were Sr. Ellen Lorenzana, SPC, Local Superior and Vice President for Finance, together with the SPC Sisters who continue to embody the Paulinian mission. They were joined by distinguished guests including Hon. Manuel T. Sagarbarria, Mayor of Dumaguete City; Agustin Miguel "Tinchio" Perdices; Dr. Edmark Ian Cabio, CESO VI, Officer-in-Charge of the DepEd Schools Division; Dr. Raul C. Alvarez Jr., REE, Ed.D., CESO III, CHED Regional Director; and Hon. Antonio Johnson Remollo, President of the SPU Dumaguete Alumni Association.

Other notable attendees included Mrs. Mariant Escaño Villegas of MEV Dance Studio; Hon. Jose Victor Vicente Imbo, former SPUDAA President; the High School Batch 1965 Diamond Jubilarians, represented by Mrs. Sylvia Villaluz; and SPUDAA–North America, represented by Mrs. Suzette Forozan. Also present were SPUD’s college deans, faculty, and staff, together forming one community united in faith and remembrance.

The Aninaw Dance Troupe brought history to life through a heartfelt presentation that traced the beginnings of St. Paul University Dumaguete and the enduring mission of the SPC Sisters who laid its foundations of faith and service. Adding vibrance to the celebration, the MEV Dancers gave an engaging performance that filled the afternoon with energy and grace. Fresh from their recent triumph as 1st Runner-Up in the Buglasan Festival Marching Band Competition 2025, the SPUD Marching Band showcased their marching band routine with pride and precision , adding a proud note of celebration to the university’s 121-year journey.

As the wreath was gently laid at the foot of the marker, a quiet stillness enveloped the crowd in a moment of shared gratitude for the faith that began more than a century ago and continues to blossom through generations of Paulinians.

As the gathering ended, the flowers rested before the marker as a quiet tribute to a mission that endures. More than a ritual of remembrance, the wreath-laying was a testament to St. Paul University Dumaguete’s unbroken spirit of faith, service, and excellence , a light that continues to guide every Paulinian heart at 121 years and beyond.
